Origins of the Kroc Centers
The Salvation Army Kroc Centers were made possible through a landmark philanthropic gift from Joan Kroc, widow of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc. Upon her death in 2003, Joan Kroc left over $1.5 billion to The Salvation Army—one of the largest single charitable donations in U.S. history at the time.
A significant portion of this gift was designated to fund the creation of large, community-focused centers intended to serve underserved urban areas.
Purpose and Mission
Kroc Centers were conceived as more than traditional community centers. Their mission is to:
