At Perspective 3D, we often say that our prospective customers don’t know what we do—until we show them. The moment they see the power of a Matterport tour, their perspective shifts, and they begin to imagine the endless possibilities. While many think of 3D capture as a tool for marketing real estate, its applications go far beyond buildings. From historical preservation to industrial documentation, immersive storytelling, and virtual collaboration, the ability to digitally capture and share spaces is transforming industries in ways people never imagined.

History Is More Than Brick and Mortar

When we think about historical preservation, our minds often go to landmarks, architecture, and heritage sites. But history isn’t just about the spaces we build—it’s about the objects, craftsmanship, and innovations that define our culture. From handcrafted furniture to cutting-edge product design, from artistic exhibits to industrial breakthroughs, the things we create tell stories about who we are. Preserving these artifacts digitally ensures that their significance isn’t lost to time.

Recently, I had the opportunity to step out into the field for a special project right here in West Michigan. As the CEO of Perspective 3D and COO of Reality Capture Experts, I don’t often scan on-site these days, but this project was something truly special. Due to confidentiality, I’m not at liberty to share specific details, but I can say that the level of detail, care, and expertise of the archives team that went into curating this space was remarkable. It was a “labor of love” that spanned years, and seeing it all come together for them was an exhilarating experience.

As I scanned the space, I was struck by the dedication of the team who meticulously arranged each piece, ensuring that every detail honored the rich history and significance of the collection.  Their passion and commitment were evident in every detail, from research and organization to the final presentation.

This project was made possible through Matterport Capture Services, which facilitates work for enterprise clients by partnering with local Matterport Service Providers like Perspective 3D. Being entrusted with this assignment was an honor, and it reinforced the value of local expertise in delivering high-quality 3D documentation for businesses and institutions that want to preserve and share their legacy. But what made it even more meaningful was knowing that thanks to Matterport, this space will be accessible to future generations in a way that traditional preservation methods simply can’t match.

The Power of Accessibility in Historical Preservation

Not everyone can visit a museum, tour an archive, or step into a factory where groundbreaking products are made. Whether due to distance, physical limitations, or time constraints, many people are unable to engage with these spaces in person. This is where Matterport’s immersive 3D technology changes everything.

With a Matterport tour, people around the world can explore, study, and appreciate significant artifacts and spaces as if they were there in person. This isn’t just about convenience—it’s about equity and inclusion, ensuring that cultural heritage is accessible to anyone, anywhere. Whether it’s students researching industrial design, historians documenting craftsmanship, or enthusiasts simply appreciating the beauty of a collection, digital twins open doors that would otherwise remain closed.

Inspiring Future Generations in Michigan and Beyond

Historical preservation isn’t just about looking back—it’s about inspiring what comes next. The people who designed, built, and curated the objects and spaces we document didn’t do so in isolation. They were influenced by the world around them, by the innovations that came before, and by the desire to create something meaningful. By preserving these contributions in a digital format, we ensure that future generations can learn from them, build upon them, and find their own inspiration.

Imagine an aspiring designer studying the intricate details of a mid-century modern chair through a high-resolution 3D model, or an engineer analyzing the layout of a historic Grand Rapids manufacturing facility without ever stepping foot inside. What we capture today fuels the creativity of tomorrow.

A New Way to Tell Stories in Michigan

At Perspective 3D, we are passionate about helping people see what’s possible. Our work isn’t just about capturing spaces—it’s about telling stories, preserving legacies, and making history accessible in ways never before imagined. We believe that when people see what we do—when they experience the power of Matterport firsthand—they understand how transformational this technology can be. And when they understand, they’re inspired.

History isn’t just about what happened in the past. It’s about what we choose to preserve for the future. Through the power of 3D capture, we’re ensuring that the remarkable artifacts, designs, and innovations of today remain a source of knowledge and inspiration for years to come.

As part of this journey, I highly recommend watching this interview with Amy Auscherman, Director of Archives and Brand Heritage at MillerKnoll. Amy is a leading voice in preserving and honoring a brand’s history, ensuring that legacy products and their stories remain a source of learning and growth for the future. Her work highlights the significance of documenting and sharing our cultural heritage, making it accessible in ways we never thought possible.
